2DCC-MIP User Develops 2D Tin Selenide for Energy and Electronic Applications  
Lauren Garten, Assistant Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Georgia Tech, is advancing research on new material platforms at the intersection of ferroelectricity, magnetism, electronics, and photovoltaics. Her group is particularly interested in tin selenide (SnSe), a 2D material predicted to combine strong piezoelectric properties with a narrow band gap—a rare combination that could enable ferroelectric transistors, piezoelectric sensors, and photovoltaic devices. Through multiple visits to the 2DCC-MIP Thin Films Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) facility, Garten and her students developed processing conditions for high-quality SnSe films, achieving controlled growth approaching the monolayer limit.
