Students Gain Hands-On Experience in Cutting-Edge Nanotechnology

The 2DCC Nanofab Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program is making remarkable strides in fostering the next generation of scientists and engineers. For the last 3 summers, talented undergraduate students from across the United States gather at the 2D Crystal Consortium (2DCC) nanofabrication facility to participate in immersive, hands-on research experiences in the rapidly evolving field of two-dimensional (2D) materials and nanotechnology. The National Science Foundation (NSF) provided funding for most of the 41 students over the last three years, but other sources provided funding, Materials Research Institute (MRI), Partnerships for Research and Education in Materials (PREM), Resident Scholar Visitor Program (RSVP), and Semiconductor Training and Research Initiatives for Veterans in Engineering (STRIVE). Faculty and staff who manage the REU program include Suzanne Mohney, Ronald Redwing, Kathleen Gehoski, and Kelsey Maxin.

The REU program provides students with the opportunity to work side-by-side with leading researchers and faculty members. Over a ten-week period, participants engage in research projects that cover a range of topics, including the synthesis, characterization, and application of 2D materials. The program's primary mission is to inspire students to pursue advanced studies and careers in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields by exposing them to state-of-the-art equipment, experimental techniques, and problem-solving strategies.

A hallmark of the 2DCC Nanofab REU experience is the personalized mentorship each student receives. Faculty advisors and graduate student mentors guide participants through each stage of their research, from formulating hypotheses to analyzing results. This mentorship fosters a collaborative atmosphere, encouraging students to ask questions, share ideas, and develop critical thinking skills.

Students in the program tackle a diverse array of research challenges. Recent projects have included fabricating ultrathin transistors, investigating the electronic and optical properties of graphene, and exploring new synthesis methods for transition metal dichalcogenides. Many participants have the opportunity to present their findings at national conferences, and some contribute to peer-reviewed publications, giving them a head start in their scientific careers.

Beyond the laboratory, the REU program emphasizes community-building and professional development. Weekly seminars, networking events, and workshops equip students with essential skills such as scientific communication, ethics, and career planning. The program also encourages collaboration among participants, fostering lifelong connections and a sense of belonging in the scientific community.

The 2DCC Nanofab REU program continues to be a vital platform for undergraduate students to gain invaluable research experience in nanotechnology. By providing access to world-class facilities, mentorship, and a vibrant community, the program not only advances scientific knowledge but also empowers the next generation of innovators and leaders in STEM.
