Polymer Nanofibers and Membranes

Penn State research includes the coating of electrospun polymer nanofibers with conducting polymers, biocatalytic nanofibers, bioresorbable nanofibers for tissue regeneration, and carbon nanotube reinforced polymer textiles. Commercial applications include reinforced aerospace composites, cosmetics, templates for tissue regeneration, wound dressing, protective outerwear, and some electrical and optical applications.

Polymer membranes, such as polymer electrolyte membranes (PEM), are being actively researched to meet the rigorous requirements of PEM fuel cells. Polymer membranes are also being studied for use in carbon capture, water treatment, and gas separation.
