Bio

Tim Tighe earned his  Ph.D. in chemistry from Penn State in 2005.  Tim did his thesis research under Dr. David Allara. The focus of research in the Allara group was on the development and application of advanced analytical techniques for surface and interface analysis.  Tim moved to Arizona after graduate school to take a job with Motorola, but found the northeast too compelling to stay away from.  He returned to Penn State in 2009 and joined the Materials Research Institute at the Pennsylvania State University in 2010. 

Specialties

  • Experience working with multidisciplinary research teams in development and characterization of materials.
  • Techniques include but are not limited to SPM, XPS, AES, FTIR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, and EDS (EDX).
  • A firm background in analytical chemistry and a solid grasp of the theory of many analytical techniques.
  • A proven research track record and experience with managing the challenges of working with a global team of researchers.

Fun Facts

When not in the lab, Tim can be found building and renovating computers for people, hanging with his family, including his deaf and half blind cocker spaniel, Juneau, or reading.  Little known facts about Tim:  He attended Defense Language Institute as a United States Marine, studying to be an Arabic linguist.  He has an affinity for the color blue.  He once sung with a punk rock band.
