MRL Building Safety Committee Meeting Minutes - 04/06/05

Presentation:
Steven G. Triebold, Fire Protection Engineer, and Assistant Chief , Alpha Fire Co., "Fire Evacuation Planning"
Items to consider: Door monitors during an evacuation, keeping hallways clear, designated meeting location(s), critical equipment and processes to turn off before evacuating, clearing the building, and assisting others.
Discussion:
- Recent incident and response in room 119 discussed and ways to improve. Overall, it was felt that the response was good, but there are some areas for improvement.
- Building maps and escape routes need to be posted.
- Official Evacuation Plan needs to be established.
- Building Inhabitants need to be re-educated in regard to evacuation procedures.
- Some fire extinguishers may need to be changed (replaced with more relevant extinguisher to the dangers currently presented in that area).
- Discussion of the need to inform building inhabitants after an incident occurs.
- Discussion of alarms in the buildings and fire drills. Fire alarm is a loud Bell, Fume hood problem a loud buzzing sound.
- Inclusion of EHS presentation on Fire Safety at semi-annual Orientation Trainings.
