Center for Glass Surfaces, Interfaces & Coatings Research

The Center for Glass Research (CGR) is a multi-university activity funded by the National Science Foundation and the membership fees of industrial participants. The founding home and administration for the CGR is at Alfred University, while Penn State is the CGR Site for Glass Surfaces, Interfaces and Coatings Research.

The Mission

To advance the fundamental understanding of glass surfaces relevant to their manufacture, treatment or coating, and commercial applications; these issues are being addressed:

  • through the development of reliable methods for the analysis of glass surfaces and interfaces,
  • and through the applications of these methods for the evaluation of processing effects and product performance.

The projects are carried out by graduate students and post-docs to meet the goals of our educational mission and to maintain a technical workforce for the industry.
