Getting a Project Started

Section I: PSU Academic User - User/Project Initiation

(PSU Principal Investigator, PSU researcher or student)

As part of the Nanofabrication Facility’s operating procedures, all new Penn State affiliated users are required to attend a project overview session. All project participants, including faculty advisors are encouraged to attend.

Project overview sessions are held each Monday morning at 9:30 am in the MRI Conference Room (RM186). New users are requested to present one or two slides outlining the project and indicating the desired outcome. To ensure your project has the highest chance of success, these sessions are held to allow new users and faculty members an opportunity to interface with the Nanofab staff prior to using the facility. In some cases, there may be other research faculty in attendance that have extensive fabrication experience and will be able to offer suggestions on process related issues.

Nanofabrication requires complex multi-step processes on a wide variety of expensive and complicated equipment. Many steps also require the use of highly toxic chemicals. To be successful using the facility, a high degree of knowledge is required. As a result, formal training is necessary for all users.
