FACILITIES TOURS

Penn State provides overviews and tours of the Nanofabrication cleanroom facility and several of the facilities within the Material Characterization Lab located in the Materials Research Institute Building in Innovation Park.

Walk by Tours

Tours for small groups or individuals can be arranged by appointment.  You should allow a minimum of 45 minutes for this tour.  While we realize it may be interesting to go into the facility, we have found that a presentation of the technology followed by a window tour is just as effective as an ”in the cleanroom tour,” and allows us to maintain the cleanliness required to perform research at the nano and micro scale – the more bodies in the cleanroom, the more particles enter the facility.  We limit “in the cleanroom tours” to incoming users of the facility and where actual demonstrations on using the equipment are required.

Walk by tours consist of the following:

  • 20-30 minute facility overview presentation in one of the conference rooms.  Space is limited to 15 people at one time. Larger groups can be accommodated with the proper planning.
  • 10 minute facility walk around which includes a window view of the Nanofabrication cleanroom and visits to the Materials Characterization Lab (MCL) TEM & Surface Analysis facilities

Tours within the cleanroom

Tours within the cleanroom can be arranged by appointment.  Please be prepared to define what the tour should consist of.  If demonstrations are needed, please indicate exactly what you are requesting.

Cleanroom tours consist of the following:

  • Cleanroom tours are limited to 10-15 students at a time.
  • Length of tour depends upon what the tour consists of and number of participants.  Cleanroom walkthroughs should not take less than 35-40 minutes as gowning takes at least 10 minutes before and after the walkthrough.  Demonstrations will take longer.
  • There is a per person cleanroom entrance fee to cover the cost of gowning consumables.
  • There is a staff charge for any tour taking more than 1 hour of staff time.  (For example:  A one hour tour involving two staff members will result in a charge of one hour of staff time.)
  • Demonstrations will be charged for at staff time and equipment time rates.
  • Billing account information must be arranged prior to the date of the tour.
