Information you will need to know for your visit at Penn State.
Travel
If you are flying to Penn State, we will make your flight arrangements for you and pay Travel Services directly.
When you arrive at University Park Airport, you will need to take a taxi to campus. A taxi ride will cost about $15. Ask the driver to take you to Pollock Commons on Bigler Road. Pollock Commons is where you will check in to your housing and is directly across the road from Nittany Apartments where you will be staying.
If you are driving or traveling by other ground transportation, we will reimburse you for mileage (if personal vehicle) or fares, as well as other miscellanouse travel expenses (taxi, tolls, etc.)
KEEP ALL OF YOUR ORIGINAL RECEIPTS AND HAND THEM IN TO LEEANNA.
Parking
For those of you who will be driving your personal vehicle to Penn State, there are two parking lots available to students living in Nittany Apartments.
Lot 42 - Nittany Silver: $60/month, $20/week (located around Nittany Apartments)
Lot 83 - Hasting Road: $30/month, $10/week (1 bus stop away, 5-10 minute walk)
Unfortunately the grant that is paying for your research does not pay for parking, so this will be a personal expense. Payment for parking may be made via cash, check or money order payable to the Pennsylvania State University.
Guidelines for permit pick up at the Parking Office: If arrival is on the weekend or after hours, you need to first park in the Eisenhower Parking Deck. The permit can be purchased the following (weekday) morning at the Parking office between 7:30 am and 8:30 am (after 8:30 am, you will get a ticket). You must then move your vehicle to the appropriate lot. The Parking Office is located in the back of Eisenhower Parking Deck. You must enter the Parking Office from outside of the building.
If you are driving and want to bring your bicycle to campus, there are plenty of bike racks to use. Definitely bring a good bike chain though, as theft does occur.
Requirements for Bike Registration:
- Be sure to have your Penn State id Card or a valid driver’s license with you to register.
- Each bicycle, in order to be registered and issued a permit, must be in a safe mechanical operating condition and be equipped as follows:
- A red reflector on the rear, visible for a distance of up to 500 feet.
- A headlamp is required if the bicycle is operated at night. The headlamp must be visible for a distance of 500 feet.
- A red reflector on the rear, visible for a distance of up to 500 feet.

Housing
Check in at Pollock Commons. It is located directly across the road from Nittany Apartments where you will be staying. Pollock Commons will give you a key and access card. You can use your access card to open certain doors and you can put money on this card and use it to do your laundry and make purchases on Campus.

Meal Plan
In the left column under “Find it!” there are links and information about all the food places on campus, along with campus maps. There are buses that go to the nearby shopping centers (Wal-Mart, Wegmans, Weis and other grocery stores). There is a grocery store called McLanahans that is within walking distance of campus and has a nice variety of groceries. On Fridays there is usually a market downtown where you can get fresh produce. If you take the bus to the mall, there is a Wal-Mart Super Center across the street that has everything. Actually there are a ton of stores there, but if you are going to take the bus to get groceries, then I recommend bringing your own heavy duty shopping bags (or a backpack) rather than using the cheap plastic bags they give you.
Stipends
You will receive your first stipend check upon arrival. The second check will be distributed around July 1. The third check, upon departure. The fourth and final check will be issued upon receipt of your final report in September.
About the Nanofabrication Laboratory
A lot of your research will take place in the Nanofabrication Lab which is located in the Materials Research Institute (MRI) Building, located in Innovation Park. You will need to take the Red Link bus To Innovation Park to get to the MRI Building, as it is not located on Campus. The Detailed REU Map below shows many of the locations that you will need to find. The office location of all of the REU Advisors is marked, so disregard the locations that do not pertain to you.
The Detailed REU Map is not big enough to show the Innovation Park location, but there are other maps available that will show Innovation Park. (See Campus Maps or Area Map)
At the Nanofabrication Lab you will have a $3,000 limit on usage ($2,500) and supplies ($500). Monica Grubb is the staff assistant that you will work with to make supply purchases. She is located in the Materials Research Laboratory Building located on Hastings Road. She can be reached at 814-863-0627 or mmm25@psu.edu. However, most of your supplies should already be ordered for you when you get here.
