This information is used to make your travel arrangements, process your appointments at Penn State, and to arrange payment of your stipends.

Information you will need to know for your visit at Penn State.

Travel

If you choose to utilize Penn State housing, your ground transportation expenses to and from the program will be reimbursed. This includes your personal vehicle mileage, tolls, bus, train, etc. Those that commute cannot be reimbursed for their mileage. KEEP ALL OF YOUR ORIGINAL RECEIPTS AND HAND THEM IN TO LEEANNA.

Parking

For those of you who will be driving your personal vehicle to Penn State and who are staying in housing have the following options for parking:

Lot 42 - Nittany Silver: $60/month, $20/week (located around Nittany Apartments)

Lot 83 - Hasting Road: $30/month, $10/week (1 bus stop away, 5-10 minute walk)

Those that are commuting to Penn State each day can acquire a student commuter permit for $15.

Parking options are Jordan East Lot 44 (next to The Bryce Jordan Center and Stadium West Lot (next to Beaver Stadium, facing The Bryce Jordan Center). Report to the Parking Office (see guidelines below for permit pick up and see maps below for locations) on the first morning you arrive to acquire your parking permit. You can then take one of the Loop and Link buses to your desired location (see CataBus link below).

Unfortunately the grant that is paying for your research does not pay for parking, so this will be a personal expense. Payment for parking may be made via cash, check or money order payable to the Pennsylvania State University.

Guidelines for permit pick up at the Parking Office: If arrival is on the weekend or after hours, you need to first park in the Eisenhower Parking Deck.  The permit can be purchased the following (weekday) morning at the Parking office between 7:30 am and 8:30 am (after 8:30 am, you will get a ticket).  You must then move your vehicle to the appropriate lot. The Parking Office is located in the back of Eisenhower Parking Deck. You must enter the Parking Office from outside of the building.

Housing

Check in at Pollock Commons. It is located near Eastview Terrace, Nittany or Pollock Residence Halls, where you will be staying. Pollock Commons will give you a key and access card. You can use your access card to open certain doors and you can put money on this card and use it to do your laundry and make purchases on Campus.

Here is the website for Housing.

PSU Access Account

You will be assigned a PSU Access Account, which will provide a PSU email address. When you arrive at Penn State you will need to activate your account. Please see instruction at the ITS Accounts Services webpage.

For those of you using Housing, after activating your account, go to Pollock Commons and use one of their computers to activate the Ethernet in your apartment. You should be able to go to the Rescom site (www.rescom.psu.edu), click on “Online Ethernet Registration Database” and enter your username and password. From this point it should also ask you for your room number and review some policies with you. If you have any questions, someone at the Pollock Commons main desk should be able to help you.

For those of you not using Housing, you will need to visit the Willard Help Desk or the 204 Wagner Building Help Desk. You will need some form of photo ID and your PSU ID number. Please contact Leeanna for your PSU ID number.

Meal Plan

In the left column under “Find it!” there are links and information about all the food places on campus, along with campus maps. There are buses that go to the nearby shopping centers (Wal-Mart, Wegmans, Weis and other grocery stores). There is a grocery store called McLanahans that is within walking distance of campus and has a nice variety of groceries. On Fridays there is usually a market downtown where you can get fresh produce. If you take the bus to the mall, there is a Wal-Mart Super Center across the street that has everything. Actually there are a ton of stores there, but if you are going to take the bus to get groceries, then I recommend bringing your own heavy duty shopping bags (or a backpack) rather than using the cheap plastic bags they give you.

Stipends

You will receive your first stipend check in Week 2. The second check will be distributed in Week 4. The third and final check will be distributed after you return from the NSTA meeting.

About the Nanofabrication Laboratory

Some of your research may take place in the Nanofabrication Lab which is located in the Materials Research Institute (MRI) Building, located in Innovation Park.  You will need to take the Red Link bus To Innovation Park to get to the MRI Building, as it is not located on Campus.  The Detailed Map below shows many of the locations that you will need to find.  Please disregard the locations that do not pertain to you.

The Area Map below shows the Innovation Park location.
