Director of Operations

Penn State’s Nanofabrication Laboratory is seeking a highly-qualified Operations Director to provide onsite management and to interface with external and internal users of the laboratory, which is one of the thirteen sites of the National Science Foundation-funded National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network. Construction is beginning this summer on an interdisciplinary materials building that will house core research laboratories having 10,000 nsf cleanroom and 12,000 nsf of high quality characterization space.
Essential Duties:
- Oversee day-to-day operations of the nanofabrication laboratory.
- Manage a technical and administrative staff of twelve working in a cleanroom environment to maintain and qualify equipment and processes, train and interface with users, and develop customized processes for users.
- Oversee facility budget and collection of user statistics.
- Interface with faculty, internal users, external users, and manage projects.
- Prepare competitive equipment grant proposals
- Recommend, identify, and purchase capital equipment.
Education and Training:
- Ph.D. in engineering or physical sciences.
- 15+ years of experience in related field of device nanofabrication research and development.
- Management and budgeting.
Skills and Abilities:
- The preferred candidate must have hands-on experience in all areas of device nanofabrication including photolithography, deposition, and etch. A demonstrated knowledge of complex multi-step device process integration is necessary.
- Experience with fabrication equipment specification and installation management.
- A relevant working knowledge of device physics as well as device and materials characterization is required.
- Background in budgeting and project costing.
- Experience in preparing complex project proposals, plans, schedules and budgets, as well as detailed reports and presentations.
- Skilled at working on problems that are extremely complex in nature where independent judgment and a high degree of initiative are required for resolving problems and making recommendations.
- Excellent communication skills including writing reports, and presentations that are a clear and understandable by management and customers.
- Ability to work with a diverse group of faculty and student researchers.
- Ability to recommend using data and implement sound solutions and strategies.
- The successful applicant needs to be highly motivated and “hands-on” with the ability to perform many of the required technical tasks.
