XRD Safety
Before users are trained on any x-ray producing equipment at Penn State, they must complete the University’s Electronic X-Ray Safety Training Course that is offered by Penn State’s Environmental Health and Safety Office. This course is required for all users and supervisors of analytical and radiographic X-ray equipment at Penn State. For more information about the safety course and/or to enroll, please visit the Environmental Health and Safety web site or contact Greg Herman (Email: Validate to view contact info ).
Upon completion of the practical part of the x-ray safety training, users are assigned an x-ray dosimeter (monitoring device), which they must wear when working in the x-ray laboratory. The user wears a wrist dosimeter on the wrist closest to the x-ray source on the instrument being used (varies with instrument). Dosimeters are exchanged each quarter (January, April, July, October) typically through the x-ray office for those users working at the MRL Building. Otherwise, dosimeters are exchanged through the Environmental Health and Safety Office in the Academic Projects Building.
