SPUTTER COATING
Instrumentation
Bal-Tec 050 Sputter Coater (located in N221A MSC Bldg)
Technique Description
Even on strongly fissured specimen surfaces a homogeneous, thin metal film is deposited, the conductivity of which is sufficient for scanning electron microscopy specimens and dielectric testing. The conductivity depends not only on the target material but also on parameters such as working distance, gas pressure, glow current, and process duration. In practice the parameters are determined by the temperature resistance of the specimens.
Sample Requirements/Specifications
Sample requirements may vary widely depending on your material type. Available metals for sputter coating are: Au, Ag, Pt

User Policies, Procedures, and Training
New users need to have a Portal account and must be trained by the technical staff before using the instrument.
User Instructions for new MSC location
- Wear gloves at all times
- Turn on the cooling water before you begin operating the system, then off when you’re finished.
The two valves (supply and return)that control the cooling water are located on the wall to the left of the machine. To turn on, turn both valves so they are parallel with their associated hose. To turn off, turn both valves so that they are perpendicular with their associated hose. - Keep the system under vacuum when you’re finished.
- DO NOT make adjustments to the Sputter System or any of its associated equipment. Please notify one of the following people if you need help or have questions:
