Building Virtual Bridges across the Borders of Science

Coray Colina, associate professor of Materials Science and Engineering; co-director, Center for the Study of Polymeric Systems

 

Prof. Coray Colina embodies the transnational and multidisciplinary nature of modern research.  A chemical engineer by training in her native Venezuela, a petroleum engineer for industry, a Ph.D. in polymers at North Carolina State, post doctoral research in biochemistry at UNC Chapel Hill, and now using computational methods to study materials as an associate professor in the Materials Science and Engineering Department at Penn State, she looks at scientific puzzles from many perspectives and encourages her students to embrace a cross-disciplinary and internationalist approach in their style of research.

Staff Spotlight  - John Cantolina  

In the MCL’s Electron Microscopy Lab
In the Electron Microscopy Lab on the ground floor of Hosler Building, research technician John Cantolina oversees three scanning electron microscopes (SEM), part of the user facilities of the Materials Characterization Laboratory.  Along with several other pieces of analytical equipment under the supervision of lab manager Mark Angelone, the SEMs are powerful tools for probing the micro- and nanoscale properties of materials.

National Science Foundation Requests $6.85 Billion for Fiscal Year 2009
Says Increase is vital to advancing science and maintaining global leadership

National Science Foundation (NSF) Director Arden L. Bement Jr. has presented the agency's proposed $6.85 billion budget for fiscal year (FY) 2009, a 13 percent increase over its actual FY 2008 budget. The additional $822.10 million would increase funding for agency programs that advance the frontiers of research and education in science and engineering.
