MRI Faculty Spotlight
Dr. Matthew Mench recently joined Penn State's Mechanical Engineering faculty and his research interests include polymer electrolyte and solid oxide fuel cells for portable, mobile, and stationary power. The next generation of automobiles may look and sound quite different than today's models. Fuel cell technology is rapidly advancing and may eventually replace internal combustion engines in cars, and batteries in many portable devices such as laptops and cell phones. If fueled by pure hydrogen, fuel cells exhaust only water into the environment.

MRI Seeds Research in Cancer Treatment via Microwaves
John Heuvel, Dinesh Agrawal and Rustum Roy are investigating the effects of microwaves on breast cancer cells. They believe that by specifically tuning the microwave H-field, they can reprogram cancer cells to die. This may be applicable to other forms of cancer.

Funding Opportunities
Worldwide University Network (WUN) Graduate Student Exchange Program
Deadline: November 18, 2002
The University is soliciting proposals for research and education exchanges for calendar year 2003 with the World University Network (WUN) partners in the United Kingdom: Universities of Bristol, Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield, Southampton, and York. Advanced materials is among the seven topic areas solicited. Proposals that include graduate student exchanges are strongly encouraged, as are those potentially leading to continuing research or education partnerships, and external support for such partnerships.
