Research Synopsis:
Biomedical uses of MicroElectroMechanical Systems (bioMEMS), Microfluidic devices for chemical sensing, biochemical separations, and drug delivery. Alternative materials in microfabrication including novel polymer fabrication technology with electronic integration. Interaction of microdevices with cells and tissues. Directed altered cellular function using microdevices for tissue engineering and medical applications.
Technologies Impacted by Research:
Microfabrication technology allows the precise localization of chemical signals which can direct and alter cellular activity. By localizing differentiation factors progenitor cells can be directed to become specific differentiated cell type. In addition, 3-dimensional microfabrication allows the incorporation of different cell types to specific areas in a device with independent access. Thus, many different cell types (each with different nutritional and environmental needs) may be incorporated
