Research Synopsis:
Powder synthesis by spray pyrolysis and spray drying, calcination and associated control of phase development and transformation by either solid state seeding or hybrid seeding. We study the kinetics of sintering and grain growth processes and manipulate that balance by novel heating (e.g. microwave) or using template particles to obtain textured ceramics. Recent efforts are focused on constrained sintering in co-fired, laminated systems and stress prediction to avoid camber and defect generatio
Technologies Impacted by Research:
Powder synthesis impacts a variety of enterprises requiring phase pure, submicron powders or particles of specific morphology. The microstructure effort has direct impact on ceramics in which specific orientations or single crystals are desired and include piezoelectic, superconducting, structural and other properties. Materials system studies include mullite, alumina, barium titanate, lead magnesium niobate, strontium barium niobate, sodium bismuth titanate, etc.
