Research Synopsis:
Research focuses on 3 areas: 1) Cellulose synthesis, organization and functionalization including new coatings to improve weather resistance or enable printing of improved inks or organic electronic materials and devices; 2) Self-assembly of engineered nanofiber materials using molecular linkers or biomolecular motors and self-organized microtubule networks; and 3) Chemically powered MEMS and pumps via catalytically produced ion gradients.
Technologies Impacted by Research:
Paper and wood fiber composite production and coating. Engineered biologically compatible materials including cellulose based tissue scaffolds. Self assembled fiber materials. Chemically powered microfluidic and mechanical devices.
