Education:

  • Ph.D., University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Metallurgical Engineering), 1993
  • B.S., University of Missouri – Rolla (Metallurgical Engineering), 1985

Research Interests:

  • Thin Films and Coatings
  • Environmentally Friendly Materials and Processes
  • Materials Characterization

Professor Matt O’Keefe’s research group develops thin films, coatings, functional units, and environmentally friendly processes and materials for wide variety of applications, including microelectronics, corrosion and wear resistance, power generation, MEMS, and biosensors. An emphasis is placed on developing material processes for industrial use through statistically designed experiments and parameter optimization. The processing techniques employed included physical vapor deposition (sputtering, evaporation), electrochemical deposition (electrolytic and electroless plating), plasma processing (reactive ion etching), immersion and spray solution deposition of ceramic films, metal deposition from organic solutions, photolithography, and integration of the processes during microfabrication. Use and development of environmentally benign materials, especially to replace toxic or carcinogenic materials, is of special interest. Characterization and testing of materials and functional devices using electron microscopy, surface spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, electrochemical evaluation, corrosion testing, capacitance, resistivity, conductivity, magnetic field strength, contact angle, and optical performance.
