Mark Spitler, Program Manager
Mark Spitler is presently Program Manager of the Solar Photochemistry Program in the Office of Basic Energy Sciences at the Department of Energy. Dr. Spitler received his B.S. degree in 1972 from Stanford University and his Ph.D. in 1977 from the University of California, Berkeley while working with Professor Melvin Calvin. Following a postdoctoral appointment at the Fritz Haber Institute in Berlin with Professor Heinz Gerischer, he served on the faculties of Amherst and Mt. Holyoke Colleges, with a concurrent appointment on the graduate faculty of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. In 1985, he assumed a position at the Polaroid Corporation, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in the development of amorphous silicon solar cells followed in 1988 by positions within the company as Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Media Systems Research and Department of Physical Chemistry. In 1997 Dr. Spitler became President of ChemMotif, Inc., a company formed with his Polaroid colleagues in Woburn, MA with an appointment as Adjunct Professor at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. For three years prior to joining the DOE in December of 2007, he was a Principal Scientist at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and served as a detailee to the DOE.
