About reCAPTCHA (http://recaptcha.net/)

A CAPTCHA is used to differentiate humans and computers. This differentiation can be vital for such tasks as thwarting spam harvesters—automated computer scripts that scour web pages for e-mail addresses. CAPTCHAs are used in a number of locations and chances are you've already used one. What makes reCAPTCHA different is the purpose of reCAPTCHA. Sure, it distinguishes between a human and computer, but it also assists in the digitization of books. Words that cannot be interpreted by Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software employed in the digitization efforts are sent to reCAPTCHA for interpretation by humans. Each successful reCAPTCHA provides another vote of confidence for an unrecognized word and each vote of confidence helps digitize books. We are able to differentiate humans from computers, books are digitized, and everyone wins.
